OSINTORFOsintorf is located in Vitebsk region, 16 kilometers away from Dubrovno. In 1995 its population was 1,700 people. The town was founded in 1672. It is known that in 1897 the population constituted 151 people and there were 20 households. The region has long been known for peat deposits. In the 20th century more than ten thousand people were required for peat extraction and they were brought from all over the republic and settled in special industrial communities. Osintorf became the center of peat extraction and was turned into an industrial community. During the Great Patriotic War there was a clandestine organization at the local peat enterprise, which gathered weapons and gave them to the partisans, saved young people from being taken to Germany. Jews appeared in Osintorf in the middle of the 1920s, when the industrial community was being created. Almost all of them worked at the local power station. In 1970 ten Jews lived in Osintorf from the total population of 2,727 (0.04% of the population). In 1979 there were no Jews left in the town. Arkady Podlipsky |
